There is a major global shortage of thermal paper. This shortage was primarily caused by the world’s primary supplier of leuco dye (a material required in the production of thermal paper) being shut down due to environmental issues.

As a result, this has created a severe shortage and limited supplies have significantly raised the cost of thermal paper worldwide. Thermal paper costs have already increased by more than 45 percent between late 2017 and July 2018. These cost increases may continue throughout the duration of 2018.
